Insights for High-Achieving Women
Your Questions About Therapy, Answered
I know reaching out for therapy can feel overwhelming, especially when you're not sure what to expect. As a licensed clinical psychologist specializing in high-achieving women, I hear certain questions again and again about anxiety, perfectionism, and the exhaustion of trying to be perfect.
Below are answers to the most common questions about my transformation-focused approach and what you can expect from this work.
Does therapy really work for anxiety and perfectionism?
Yes, therapy is highly effective for anxiety and perfectionist patterns, especially when it addresses the root beliefs driving these issues rather than just managing symptoms. Research consistently shows that therapy helps reduce anxiety, perfectionism, and related stress. My approach focuses on transforming the underlying beliefs that create these patterns, which tends to create more lasting change than symptom management alone.
How long does therapy take to see results?
Most clients notice improvements in their daily anxiety and perfectionist patterns within 4-8 weeks of consistent sessions. However, deeper transformation typically takes 6-18 months. The timeline depends on your goals, how long you've had these patterns, and how consistently you attend sessions. Many clients report sleeping better and feeling more confident in decisions within the first month.
Is virtual therapy as effective as in-person therapy?
Research consistently shows virtual therapy is just as effective as in-person sessions for anxiety, perfectionism, and related concerns. Many clients actually prefer virtual sessions because they're in their own comfortable space, there's no travel time, and it provides complete privacy. The therapeutic relationship and the work we do together creates change, not the physical location.
What should I expect in my first therapy session?
Your first session focuses on understanding your background, current struggles, and goals for therapy. I'll ask about your history with anxiety or perfectionism, family dynamics, and what's brought you to seek support now. You'll also get a sense of whether my approach feels like a good fit. There's no pressure to share more than you're comfortable with - we build trust gradually.
How do I know if I need therapy for anxiety or perfectionism?
If anxiety or perfectionism is interfering with your daily life, relationships, or work performance, therapy can help. Common signs include constant overthinking, difficulty making decisions without extensive research, procrastination on important projects, or feeling successful but empty. You don't need to be in crisis - many of my clients are high-functioning but know they could feel better.
What's the difference between a psychologist and a therapist?
A psychologist has doctoral-level training (PhD or PsyD) and is licensed to provide therapy, conduct psychological testing, and diagnose mental health conditions. Other therapists may have master's degrees in counseling or social work. As a licensed clinical psychologist, I have extensive training in both therapy techniques and psychological assessment, which helps me understand the deeper patterns behind your struggles.
Can therapy help with imposter syndrome and self-doubt?
Absolutely. Imposter syndrome and chronic self-doubt are often rooted in limiting beliefs about your capabilities and worth that formed earlier in life. Through therapy, we can identify where these beliefs came from, examine whether they're actually accurate, and develop a more realistic and self-compassionate view of yourself. Many high-achieving women struggle with this despite obvious success.
How much does therapy cost and do you accept insurance?
My rate is $250 per hour. I work primarily with self-pay clients to provide personalized, unrestricted care. I remain in-network with Anthem and Sentara for existing clients only. Working outside insurance constraints allows me to tailor our sessions completely to your needs rather than insurance requirements. Many clients find this investment pays for itself through improved work performance and reduced stress.
